Overcome Your Fear of Networking --
Now!
Imagine going to a networking meeting
sponsored by your local Chamber of Commerce. As you register and
hand in your business card (usual protocol) at the front desk, you
realize that there are 50 business professionals attending that
you've never met. Am I nervous? Should I be nervous? Maybe a
better question would be, 'What is it about this scenario that is
making me nervous?' The answer may be the fear of the unknown
and the uncertainty of how strangers may react when you meet them.
It's difficult to determine the outcome of many of our
conversations, and therefore, we fear that uncertainty. These fears
drive other concerns. How do I approach someone that I've never
met? How do I politely interrupt their conversation? How do I
introduce myself? What will their reaction be? What if they don't
like me? What if I say the wrong thing? And so on.
Here's another question to ask yourself, 'What are some of
the worst things that can happen when meeting someone new?'
Answers: They may not like you; your message may not be clear;
there may not be a positive reaction to your message; or you may say
or do something embarrassing. So what? Gracefully apologize or
politely move on with a 'very nice to meet you - good luck!'
Hey, you just learned what to do and what not to do for next time.
Good stuff, right? So what do you really have to lose?
Nothing! But there is plenty to gain - practice, confidence and
lessons learned. As long as you're prepared for the chamber meeting,
networking function, golf outing, or cocktail party with:
- an understanding of the attendees;
- your purpose for attending (hint: it's not to peddle your
products or services);
- the intention of helping those you meet;
- the ability to introduce yourself and define your purpose;
- questions to ask to learn more about those you meet;
- a follow up strategy;
- business cards,
--you're in excellent shape! So again, what do you have to
lose? Nothing!
